Une basse saturée dégueulant sur des kicks lourds, et cette voix féminine qui répétait compulsivement «I luv U». Simple, efficace et ultra impactant. Puis, ce flow d’un rappeur à l’accent londonien, illogique et saccadé. Dizzee Rascal. Je me souviens encore la première chose que je me suis dit : «Putain, qui est ce génie?». 6 ans et demi après son premier album «In da corner», la question persiste. «Putain, qui est ce génie ?». Avec son dernier opus, cet artiste brouille encore plus les pistes en changeant totalement de style. Mc, producteur et co fondateur de son label, ce jeune anglais va essayer de nous en dire un peu plus sur lui et sa musique.

Then, a flow coming from this Cockney accent rapper, illogical and jerked. Dizzee Rascal. I still remember the first thing I told myself: “Fuck, who is this genius?”. 6 years and a half after his first album “In da corner”, the question persists. “Fuck, who is this genius?”. With his last opus, this artist covered the tracks even more by changing style completely. Mc, producer and co-founder of his label, this young Brit will try to tell us a little more about him and his music.

Be Street : Hello Mr Dylan Mills. En anglais bien élevé qui ne jure pas, comment te présenterais-tu à nos lecteurs ?
Dylan Mills est un soul man, un faiseur de musique. Je suis un peu de tout en fait…

Be Street : Hi, Dylan Mills. In a well heeled English how would you present yourself to our readers ?
Why Dylan Mills is a music man a soul writer. I’m a bit of everything I mash it all up. From rock to dance through bass.

B.S : Beaucoup de chemin pour un petit gars du Bow, tu tires quel bilan de ton parcours ?
Les radios pirates, festival, fêtes. Il n’y a pas une seule chose mec. Je vis, voila c’est ça, je vis…

B.S : You’ve come a long way from Bow, what memories do you cherish the most from the path that you’ve taken ?
The pirate radios, festivals, parties. It ain’t no one thing man. Living man, living is what it was.

B.S : D’un grime saccadé et nerveux à des sons orientés plus Pop / Eurodance, tu parlerais plus d’un tournant artistique ou plutôt d’une évolution logique ?
Les deux.

B.S : From a nervous and cut up grime to sounds that are more poppy and eurodance, would you say this is more of a change in your way of expressing yourself or a logical evolution ?
Both.

B.S : Est ce que ça t’a semblé plus difficile de sonner mainstream ?
Ca me viens naturellement, c’est ma façon de faire. Comme Bruce Lee et le Kung fu. Donc oui, ça serait dur.

B.S : Would you find it hard to sound more mainstream ?
What I do is natural man, it’s my way of doing things. Like what Bruce Lee did with kung-fu. So yeah it would be.

B.S : Dans ton single «Bonkers», tu as tout de suite annoncé la couleur… Après la sortie et le succès de ton album, j’imagine que tu n’as aucun regret vis-à-vis de cette liberté revendiquée ?
T’as raison. Mais si j’en ai un, j’aurai aimé faire ça plus tôt ! Mais rien de tel que le présent.

B.S : With « Bonkers » you say what’s what loud and clear. With the success it’s had I doubt very much you have any regrets…
You’re right there mate. Well I do have one, I wish I had done it earlier ! But there is no time like the present.

B.S : Tu dis souvent que cet album est une synthèse de la musique anglaise que tu aimes, ça signifie que tu trouves que la bassline ou la fidget sont inintéressantes ?
Pas que la musique anglaise, tout type de musique.

B.S : You say that this album is a mash up of the English music you like, so this would be mean you think bassline and fidget are ininteresting ?
It’s not only English music, it’s from all over and it’s every kind of music man.

B.S : Beaucoup de producteurs en collaboration et pourtant tu continues le beatmaking, c’est un véritable besoin ?
J’aime ça. Et je me paie le luxe de toujours faire ce que j’aime.

B.S : You’re working alongside quite a few producers but you still carry on with the beatmaking… Is this a real need for you ?
I like doing it. And I’ve always made sure I do what I like.

B.S : On va passer le cliché du jeune noir du ghetto qui réussit pour du moins commun. As-tu conscience d’être l’un des seuls rappeurs européens qui a une notoriété internationale ?
J’ai entendu ça oui…

B.S : Let’s avoid the more than common cliche of the kid from the hood who makes it. DO you realize that you’re one of the only european rappers with an international reach ?
I’ve been told, yes…

B.S : Comment gères-tu ta carrière et les choix décisifs à 20 ans ?
Je fais tout ça avec mon manager, on est une équipe. Mais les sorties d’albums se font toutes indépendamment d’un label.

B.S : How do you manage your career and choices at only 20 ?
It’s all done alongside my manager, we’re a team. But record releases are all done independently.

B.S : Le rap évolue vite, tu te vois comment dans 10 ans ?
Mec, je vis au jour le jour, mais je vais tenter… Je dirais le plus grand artiste de tous les temps, je dis bien artiste et pas rappeur.

B.S : Rap evolves quickly, where do you see yourself in ten years ?
Man, I live day by day, but I’ll give it a shot… I’d say biggest artist of all time, not rapper but artist.

B.S : Tout l’été sur les routes pour des lives, et ça continue, quels sont tes meilleurs souvenirs sur ce tour ?
La tournée en ce moment est la meilleure pour l’instant, un bol d’air frais. Le Big Day Out tour que j’ai fait en Australie il y a quelques temps, c’était plus des vacances qu’autre chose. Je le refais d’ailleurs en 2010.

B.S : What are your best memories of your recent touring ?
The tour I’m on now is the best so far, a breeze. The Big Day Out tour I did in Australia a few years back was more like a holiday than an actual tour. And I’m doing it again in 2010.

B.S : Y at-il des prochains projets de ton label « Dirty Stank Recordings» de prévu ?
Oui, je bosse avec Newham Generals en ce moment. Ils me suivent en tournée.

B.S : Are there any upcoming events for Dirtee Stank Recordings ?
Yeah man, currently working and touring with Newham Generals.

B.S : Derniers mots pour tes fans ?
J’ai hate d’être avec vous en novembre et de vous donner le meilleur concert de tous les temps. On se voit en novembre à Paris mec !

B.S : Any last words for the fans ?
Man, I can’t wait to get out there in November and give them the best gig they’ve ever had. See you in november in Paris !
